It's not often that the work of amateur developers catches the attention of industry experts, but there are exceptions. Recently, Thomas Morgan from Digital Foundry decided to test a fan-made PC version of Bloodborne, and he was impressed with the results.
ShadPS4 Emulator: A Promising Start
The PC port of Bloodborne runs through the ShadPS4 emulator. While acknowledged as being somewhat "raw," Morgan was generally pleased with its performance. He used build 0.5.1 by diegolix29, finding it the most stable for his test rig (AMD Ryzen 7 5700X and GeForce RTX 4080).
He did make some important adjustments:
- Used ShadPS4 0.5.1 build by diegolix29,
- Installed the Vertex Explosion Fix mod (resolves polygon issues but limits character customization).
- Played the game at 1152p resolution for stable frame rates.
Using these settings, the game largely maintained 60 FPS, though some intense scenes caused frame rates to drop to around 45 due to the CPU bottleneck. Attempts to play at 1440p or 1800p resulted in crashes and performance degradation. Nevertheless, Morgan lauded the work of the hobbyist programmers, noting that this latest version of the emulator performs significantly better than previous iterations.
Bloodborne Remaster Project
Morgan also assessed the Bloodborne Remaster Project, designed to enhance the 2015 hit. He appreciated the visual improvements but noted that not everyone would find the stylistic changes to their liking.
Digital Foundry's Verdict
Overall, the Digital Foundry specialist was impressed by the ShadPS4 team's efforts. The very fact that PlayStation 4 emulation is possible is a remarkable achievement that deserves recognition.
