GMKTec is preparing to launch the GMK G9, their first system specifically designed for use as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. While marketed as a NAS, it's essentially a feature-packed mini PC with robust storage capabilities.
Key Features of the GMK G9
The GMK G9 comes equipped with:
- Intel N150 quad-core processor (6-watt)
- 12GB of LPDDR5-4800 memory
- 64GB of eMMC storage
- Four M.2 2280 slots, supporting up to 32TB of SSD storage
- Pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu
- Dual 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports
- WiFi 6E support
Ports and Connectivity
The G9 offers a comprehensive selection of ports, including:
- 2 x 2.5 Gb Ethernet
- 2 x HDMI
- 3 x USB 3.2 Type-A
- 1 x USB Type-C (data and video)
- 1 x USB Type-C (power only)
- 1 x 3.5mm audio jack
NAS or Mini PC?
While GMK is positioning the G9 as a NAS, it functions much like a high-storage mini PC. This flexibility allows it to be used as a file server, media center, or for other applications. For optimal NAS performance, users may want to consider installing a dedicated OS like TrueNAS, OpenMediaVault, or Unraid.
SSD-Only Design
Unlike typical NAS devices with 3.5-inch hard drive bays, the GMK G9 is an SSD-only device. While this may mean higher initial costs for large storage setups, it offers the benefits of silent operation and faster read/write speeds. This is ideal for those who prioritize speed and quiet over pure storage capacity.
Pricing and Availability
GMK has not yet announced the official pricing or release date for the G9 NAS. However, it is rumored to cost in the $289 range, but note that pricing may vary significantly by retailer and configuration. We advise exercising caution with retailers listing variable prices for the same device with different storage options, as it may reflect incorrect information or placeholders. More information should be available in the near future.
