Until recently, Google equipped its simplified Pixel smartphone versions with the same hardware platform as the premium models. However, according to insiders, this year's approach may be different. Rumors suggest the upcoming Pixel 10a will use an older processor, potentially cutting costs in a key area.
Tensor G4 for Pixel 10a, Not G5
According to Android Authority, the "budget" Pixel 10a will be based on the Tensor G4 processor, the same chip used in the Pixel 9 and 9a models. This marks a departure from Google’s usual practice, as typically, the "a" series shares the same processor as their flagship counterparts. There's a chance that this change may also result in limited access to some AI features, which require the more powerful G5 chip.
Reasons for the Downgrade
The source suggests the primary reason for this "downgrade" is the high cost of the new mobile platform. It could also indicate a shift in Google's strategy to more clearly differentiate its devices by price tier, similar to how Apple has historically used different chips in standard and Pro iPhones. Google has not commented on any of the insider reports so far.
