HDMI version 2.2 has been officially confirmed and will launch at CES 2025, as indicated by an invitation sent by the HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA). The new standard promises higher bandwidth and is expected to be a topic of conversation as next-generation GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA are also on the horizon.
The email confirming HDMI 2.2 explicitly states “new specifications” and “higher bandwidth,” but lacks specifics on the actual specifications or next-gen GPU support. These details will be unveiled at CES 2025 on January 6th at 10:00 AM, just before AMD's new Radeon GPU keynote.
The "About HDMI Licensing Administrator" section further confirms the license of "Version 2.2 of HDMI Specifications," confirming that this standard is a reality and not speculation.
Bandwidth and DisplayPort Comparison
The current HDMI 2.1 standard supports a maximum bandwidth of 48 Gbps, which falls short of DisplayPort 2.1a's theoretical 80 Gbps. Higher bandwidth allows for higher resolutions, HDR, and higher refresh rates without relying on Display Stream Compression (DSC).
DisplayPort 2.0 adoption has been slow, with NVIDIA surprisingly omitting it from their RTX 40 series. However, the upcoming RTX 50 series is rumored to feature the newest DP standard, already supported by AMD RDNA3 and Intel Battlemage series (with some limitations).
