The developers of the popular custom Android ROM, LineageOS, have released a new version based on Android 15. LineageOS 22 can be installed on over 100 smartphone models, including several that are newly supported and did not receive the 21st version of the ROM.
LineageOS 22 is based on Android 15 QPR1 and includes all security updates up to December 2024. Key changes from version 21 include:
- New Apps: Replacement of the Eleven media player with the new Twelve player and addition of the Camelot PDF viewer.
- Twelve Media Player: Includes landscape mode for large screens and tablets and supports various music server protocols like Subsonic and Jellyfin.
- WebView Update: Updated to Chromium 131.0.6778.200.
- App Updates: Updated versions of SeedVault and Etar applications.
- Extraction Tool Optimization: Extraction process reduced from 180 to 30 seconds.
- Virtualization Support: Addition of virtIO interface, used in QEMU, crosvm, UTM and other virtualization solutions.
The developers note that Android's shift to mainline development and increased size of quarterly Android updates (QPR) have complicated the ROM development process. This requires code base updates every 3 months. Additionally, Google's tendency to suddenly deprecate or remove code means that older devices could lose support mid-cycle. To reflect this, the version numbering has changed to include point releases with the new version being LineageOS 22.1.
