Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has announced he is developing Minecraft 2 after a hiatus from the spotlight following the sale of the Minecraft IP to Microsoft.
On January 1st, Persson conducted a poll on X, asking fans whether they were more interested in a Super Hot/Dungeons & Dragons hybrid game or Minecraft 2. While the results of the poll were seemingly a foregone conclusion, Persson surprisingly declared the results as an official announcement of Minecraft 2.
In a lengthy letter to fans, Persson revealed he is back in a creative mindset and ready to make games. He admitted that after his sudden fame and fortune, he lost some sense of purpose, but that is now behind him.
"I have indeed announced Minecraft 2. It seems like people really want me to make another game very similar to the first one, and I’m enjoying working on games again. It doesn't matter so much which game I make first (or even if I make other games), but I know I’m working on one of them. So, I decided to honestly try to make a spiritual successor to Minecraft and do a poll about it,” he stated.
In the same letter, Notch criticized Microsoft for what he sees as the company’s negative influence on Mojang’s work. Persson has yet to announce any kind of a release date for the game.
