Tech blogger Zack Nelson has put the OnePlus 13 and 13R smartphones through his signature durability tests. This test explores how the $300 price difference affects the build quality and overall resistance of the more affordable model, the OnePlus 13R. The results turned out to be quite unexpected.
Scratch Test
First, Nelson tested the screens of both devices. The pricier OnePlus 13 features a "ceramic" glass, while the 13R is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7. However, the scratch test revealed that both devices performed similarly. Scratches appeared after being scratched with a #6 hardness pick, much like most other smartphones.
The side frames of both phones were easily scratched using a utility knife.
Fingerprint Scanner Test
Next, the fingerprint scanners were tested. The OnePlus 13 uses an ultrasonic sensor, while the 13R uses a cheaper optical sensor. After scratching the display over the fingerprint scanner and wetting it, the OnePlus 13R responded to the finger faster and more accurately.
Bend Test
Both smartphones survived the final bend test. However, the back cover of the OnePlus 13 deformed during the process, while the more affordable OnePlus 13R proved to be more rigid and emerged from the test without any damage.
