PlayStation 5 May Get Native PlayStation 3 Emulation

Research and prototyping suggest that native PlayStation 3 emulation on PlayStation 5 may become a reality in the future.

The possibility of native PlayStation 3 game emulation on the PlayStation 5 is being explored, according to recent reports. This would potentially allow players to play PS3 games directly on their PS5 consoles instead of relying on cloud streaming.

Implicit Conversions Researching Native Emulation

Implicit Conversions, the studio responsible for the PlayStation Classics ports on PS5, has listed on its website that it is researching and prototyping a PlayStation 3 emulator for Syrup, their engine used for those ports. The "Dreaming About" tag suggests that this feature is still in the early stages of development.

Currently, PlayStation 3 games on PS5 via PS Plus Premium are only available through cloud gaming. However, a test conducted on an AMD BC-250, which uses PlayStation 5 silicon, showed that the PS5 hardware is capable of running emulated PS3 games well, even at higher resolutions. Games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Little Big Planet ran well despite hardware limitations.

While PS3 games are currently accessible through cloud streaming via a PS Plus Premium subscription, native emulation offers the potential for improved performance and better user experience.
