A new leak suggests the PlayStation 6 is further along in development, potentially launching in 2027 with a powerful AMD GPU.

PlayStation 6 Development Update

According to insider Kepler, who previously leaked specs for the PS5 Pro, the PlayStation 6 is already 'design complete and in pre-silicon validation'. The first iteration of the console's chip, known as A0 tapeout, is reportedly scheduled for late this year. If these claims hold true, the PS6 could be launched in late 2027, following Sony's typical two-year gap from A0 tapeout to console release.

This timeline aligns with Sony's past console releases, with the PlayStation 4 launching in 2013, seven years after the PS3, and the PS5 arriving in 2020, another seven years later. While Sony has acknowledged the PlayStation 5 being in the 'latter half of the console cycle', the competitive landscape with Xbox and the performance of PS5 sales could influence this timeline.

PlayStation 6 Specifications

Kepler also shared alleged details about the PlayStation 6's specifications, claiming its GPU is a 'fork of [AMD] gfx13', also known as UDNA (previously RDNA 5). For comparison, the PS5 Pro relies primarily on RDNA 2 architecture, but integrates features from RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 for enhanced ray-tracing.

Additionally, Chinese forum user zhangzhonghao suggests that the PlayStation 6 will leverage AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. This technology is known for significantly boosting performance in AMD's high-end gaming processors.

All indications point to the PlayStation 6 being a powerful console. However, considering the incremental improvements in graphics in recent years, Sony may need to offer more than just graphical power to make the next PlayStation a compelling upgrade.
