Alright, horror fans, brace yourselves! CAPCOM just dropped some major news: the Resident Evil 4 Remake has officially sold over 9 million copies since its release back in March 2023. That’s right, nine million! It’s a testament to the game's enduring appeal and the incredible job CAPCOM did in bringing this classic back to life.
And let's be honest, that's a huge deal considering it's essentially the same game we all know and love from 2005. This isn't just a fresh coat of paint - it's a full-blown reimagining that managed to capture both new players and long-time fans alike.
A Sales Juggernaut
The sales figures are pretty impressive, to say the least:
- 3 million units sold in the first two days!
- 4 million by early April 2023
- 5 million by late July 2023
- 7 million by the game’s first anniversary
It's safe to say the game has been a consistent hit from the get-go!

Critical Acclaim
The critics were generally pretty impressed, too, though not everyone was completely blown away. Even our own Nathan Birch (while still giving it an awesome 8.5/10) felt it could've been even more ambitious:
...Resident Evil 4 is still a very good game. I may be a bit disappointed by the scope and ambition of Capcom’s reimagining, but RE4 is still one of the most inventive and engaging action-horror games ever made... The Resident Evil 4 remake is still a fun, bombastic dose of mayhem, I just feel like it had the potential to be even better.
What's Next for Resident Evil?
Okay, so RE4 is a smash hit, but what's next for the franchise? Well, 2025 is shaping up to be pretty huge, with rumors swirling about the reveal of Resident Evil 9! Not only that, but the rumor mill is churning out some tasty details: It's suggested that RE9 might take inspiration from the atmosphere of RE4 and may even feature not one, but two "unkillable stalkers" (think Nemesis). If that wasn't enough, we might also see the return of some of the series' most iconic protagonists: Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy!
Exciting times for Resident Evil fans indeed.
