Revisiting the AMD R9 Fury X: Still a 1440p Gaming Contender in 2025

We push the legendary AMD R9 Fury X from 2015 to its limits in modern games at 1440p. See how this classic GPU performs with an i7-6950X and find out

Alright, folks, let's take a trip back in time! Today, we're firing up a legend: the AMD R9 Fury X. This beast of a graphics card, released back in 2015, packed a serious punch with 4,096 shaders, 4GB of HBM memory, and a direct connection between the memory and the chip. It's a true testament to engineering of its era.

We're pairing this classic GPU with an Intel i7-6950X, a 10-core/20-thread monster. The goal? To see how the R9 Fury X holds up in modern games at 1440p resolution. Let's dive right in!

Revisiting the AMD R9 Fury X: Still a 1440p Gaming Contender in 2025

Battlefield 3: Still Crushing It

First up, we're throwing it back to Battlefield 3, a classic that's still a blast to play. And wow, the Fury X absolutely tears through it! We're seeing a rock-solid performance at 1440p with Ultra settings. Temperatures are surprisingly good, the card is using around 2.5GB of its VRAM. Honestly, this performance is bananas for a card of this age. The game is running incredibly smooth, and I can't say anything bad about it.

Battlefield 1: Gorgeous and Smooth

Next, we're stepping up the graphics with Battlefield 1, a truly gorgeous game. Again, the R9 Fury X handles it like a champ at 1440p with Ultra settings, averaging close to 100 FPS. Both the GPU and CPU temps are playing nice, hovering around 46-47°C. This game clearly loves this system, and the combination is just awesome.

Fortnite: Pushing for High Refresh Rates

Time for some Fortnite! We're in performance mode with 1440p at max settings, and the R9 Fury X delivers hundreds of FPS! The frame rate is so high, it's a perfect match for a 240Hz monitor. Latency is great with low ms, making the gameplay buttery smooth. It's using a surprisingly small 2.2GB of VRAM. This card is definitely showing its strengths here.

PUBG: High Details and Smooth Gameplay

Jumping into PUBG at 1440p with high details and the R9 Fury X still holds its own, maintaining great performance at 100% render scale. I was surprised by how well it was performing with High settings, and it really does the job at 1440p. It's utilizing around 3.5GB of VRAM and the temperatures are well within safe limits.

Forza Horizon: Medium Settings and 60 FPS

Now for something different, Forza Horizon at 1440p with medium settings and I'm getting a solid 80 FPS. VRAM usage is maxed out at 3.9GB but the card manages to maintain a stable 60 FPS range. This proves that the card is doing exactly what it is intended to do with a solid performance.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive: The VRAM Limit

We're testing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) at 1440p with max details. I wanted to push the card to its limits, and it definitely showed some stress. It's using around 3.7GB of VRAM and the temps are impressively low at 44°C! While the card is capable at 1440p, for a better experience in this type of game, it's recommended to lower the settings, but it's good to know that it's capable at 1440p.

Cyberpunk 2077: 1440p and Frame Generation

Finally, we tackle Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with frame generation and low details. The R9 Fury X hits around 60 FPS while using around 3GB of VRAM. It does exactly what I needed to see and that was to maintain a steady performance. What makes this more impressive is the fact that temps are still below 50°C. I am loving the performance and also the temperature of the GPU.

A Quick Note on That Pump

I've got to say, the cooling on this card is realy good The temperatures are amazing, I mean the card is just chilling in all the games I'm playing and I am actually impressed. I'm already thinking about finding more pumps to test out on other GPUs. This is a great solution and I am impressed with it.

Warframe: Pushing The Limits

Just for fun, we're jumping into Warframe at 1440p maxed settings. I wanted to see the card under a bit of stress, and it definitely put it to the test. I was completely wrong because the card performed better than expected. The card is hitting a VRAM usage of 2.5GB and the temps are around 51-53°C. This was the first game that I pushed the R9 Fury X to the maximum and this card feels insane!

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

Overall, the AMD R9 Fury X is a fantastic card, even in 2025. We tested it at 1440p with different quality settings to test its limitations, and I'm completely impressed by its performance. While it might not crush every new game on ultra settings, it proves it can handle modern titles at 1440p with a few setting adjustments. This card deserves more testing. I definitely want to test it again and maybe I can find two for crossfire configuration, but considering how expensive it was I don't think that's an option for me.
