Samsung has introduced a new approach to microLED technology at CES 2025, utilizing microLEDs as a backlight for traditional LCD panels rather than as individual subpixels. This innovative method aims to make the benefits of microLEDs more accessible by lowering production costs, while still providing excellent picture quality.
The MicroLED Backlight Approach
Traditional microLED displays, where each pixel is an individual LED, are typically expensive. Samsung's compromise involves using microLEDs as a highly precise backlight for LCD panels. This new approach is designed to deliver enhanced backlight control with more zones compared to standard mini-LED technology. Samsung estimates that this could mean tens or even hundreds of thousands of dimming zones, instead of the thousands found in mini-LED TVs.
