Before the resurgence of portable gaming consoles, Sony ventured into the handheld market with the PlayStation Vita. Despite being beloved by many gamers, the console ultimately proved to be a failure for the company. Now, a Sony veteran has shed light on what led to the handheld's demise.
Shuhei Yoshida on the PS Vita's Downfall
Shuhei Yoshida, who spent over 30 years at Sony, has discussed the reasons behind the PlayStation Vita's failure. According to Yoshida, one of the primary issues was Sony's limited resources. The company didn't have enough developers to create games for both the main PlayStation 4 and the Vita simultaneously.
Another significant problem was the console's proprietary memory card format, which Yoshida believes was a mistake on Sony's part. Furthermore, the rear touchpad added to the production costs and offered limited functional benefits.
Yoshida's Top Games of 2024
In a separate note, Yoshida also recently shared his list of the best games of 2024, highlighting 11 indie titles. Several of these games received awards at various industry events.
