Microsoft has announced the date for the annual Xbox Developer Direct, set to take place on January 23 at 10 AM Pacific Time (1 PM Eastern Time / 6 PM UK / 7 PM Central European Time). The event will showcase upcoming first-party games for PC and Xbox consoles, and can be viewed on Xbox social channels.
DOOM: The Dark Ages Takes Center Stage
The most highly anticipated game to be featured is id Software's DOOM: The Dark Ages. This eighth installment in the main DOOM series is a prequel, exploring the origins of the Slayer within a medieval-inspired setting. It will also be available on PlayStation 5, although the PC version will boast advanced visuals with NVIDIA DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation and path traced graphics.
South of Midnight: A Narrative-Focused Action-Adventure
Compulsion Games' new IP, South of Midnight, will also be showcased at the Developer Direct. This action/adventure title features a unique stop-motion-like art style inspired by deep South folk tales. While the game’s core is an action/adventure, it puts emphasis on narrative. Rumors suggest a March launch for this title, which may be confirmed during the broadcast.
Third-Party Inclusion: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
This year, Microsoft is also featuring a third-party title: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive, this JRPG blends turn-based and real-time combat. The game will be available on Game Pass, explaining its inclusion in the Developer Direct.
A Surprise Game Reveal
Microsoft has teased a "visit to a surprise location to see another studio's brand new game." This mystery reveal promises to be a highlight of the event, sparking much speculation among fans.
