The delayed release of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles isn't due to any exclusivity deal, but rather to the Xbox Series S' 10 GB of RAM and developer Game Science's current optimization capabilities.
Game Science CEO and Game Director Feng Ji, speaking on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, commented on the game's multiple Steam Awards, including Game of the Year and Outstanding Story-Rich awards. He stated that the only thing missing for the game is its release on Xbox consoles. Feng Ji explained that the 10 GB of shared memory on the Xbox Series S, coupled with the team's optimization experience, is the primary obstacle.
Given that Black Myth: Wukong already struggles to run smoothly on the more powerful Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 (requiring frame generation for acceptable performance in some cases), Feng Ji's statements aren't entirely surprising. It highlights the challenge of optimizing games for varying hardware configurations. The hope remains that Game Science can improve its optimization skills to finally bring their game to Xbox consoles, as it has been lauded as a worthwhile experience for many.
Despite some minor gameplay flaws, Black Myth: Wukong has been praised as a strong debut title, blending elements of popular franchises to deliver an engaging action RPG experience that is highly enjoyable.
