Apple has recently launched the iPhone 16e into the smartphone arena for consumption. Consider it the new face of the entry-level lineup that is supposed to take the 3rd generation iPhone SE down the drain. Do not be fooled by the mention of "entry-level." This phone has serious upgrades and points toward interesting changes in Apple's strategy.
Apple iPhone 16e: Modern Design Arrives
The classic iPhone SE had a home button with Touch ID. Those days are gone for the 'e' series. The modern iPhone 16e has taken a different approach by ditching legacy features. It creates space for an impressive 6.1-inch display. A notch is present up top, housing the front camera and Face ID tech. This move aligns their entry-level option with the design language of the main iPhone series.
iPhone 16e vs. iPhone 16: Surprisingly Close
The design may echo the iPhone 14, but the iPhone 16e has much in common with the standard iPhone 16 under the hood. They are dimensionally virtually twins. The 16e now has Super Retina XDR OLED displays with the same sharpness of 460 pixels per inch. It comes alive with the same lightning-fast Apple A18 processor, capable of supporting Apple's new AI features, Apple Intelligence. Benefits include the contemporary USB-C port and at least 128GB of storage. An Action button is also present on the side.
Key Differences Explained
Apple made separations between models. The main differences are:
- The Camera: The iPhone 16e has a single 48MP rear camera, without a dual-camera setup like the iPhone 16.
- Display Notch: The 16e maintains the notch. The iPhone 16 appears to have the refined hole-punch style cutout.
- MagSafe: Not available on the 16e. Wireless charging stays, but no magnetic attachment and fast charging support offered by MagSafe.
Apple Modem and Battery Life Boost
The iPhone 16e is the first iPhone to utilize Apple's in-house C1 modem, severing ties from Qualcomm. Apple claims it is "the most battery-efficient modem ever on an iPhone." The result is potentially better battery life. Apple says the iPhone 16e can stream video for 21 hours, a significant improvement over the iPhone 16's 18 hours.
Charging Details
Both phones offer regular Qi wireless charging and wired charging of 20 watts or faster via USB-C. 30 minutes of plugged-in charging should bring the battery to 50%, according to Apple.
Entry-Level, Evolved - The Bottom Line
The iPhone 16e is a considerable jump forward for Apple's entry-level offerings. It delivers modern features, good performance, and good battery life, while being more pocket-friendly at a price from $599. Apple signals its intent to reach even the economically sensitive part of the smartphone market.
