We meet Cole Grey, a protagonist who lives in a dystopian future where 'Chernobylite' is the lifeblood of civilization. This substance, while driving progress, has created deep societal rifts, placing many like Cole on the fringes.

Desperate situations bring Cole to the 'Planewalker' initiative. This is a shadowy operation involving travel to parallel universes in order to mine Chernobylite. This journey demands genetic modifications. Cole is forced to absorb the essence of Chernobylite and sacrifice parts of himself. In one final desperate bid to feed his family, he finds himself deep in the heart of the Exclusion Zone, face to face with its silent ruler, the enigmatic Black Stalker. The obvious objective for Cole is to get out of the Zone and head home.
