Framework, known for creating upgradable and repairable laptops, has moved into the desktop division. iFixit, the repair experts, are the first to examine the new Framework Desktop. The user-friendly approach of Framework appears to extend to their desktop as well. Initial impressions from iFixit are overwhelmingly favorable.
Tool-Free Entry: A Repair Dream Realized
Imagine a PC disassembly without needing a screwdriver. That is the Framework Desktop. iFixit reports the case design is brilliant. Panels are secured with thumbscrews and magnets. This tool-less access is a major surprise. It clearly signals Framework's priority for easy user access.
Replacing components is equally easy. Swapping the Noctua fan is straightforward. Any standard 120mm fan will work. Accessing the M.2 SSD slots requires only a few screws. iFixit notes these considerations make upgrading, disassembling, and repairing the Framework Desktop genuinely easy.
Standard Components Where Essential
The Framework Desktop continues to impress with standard component deployment:
- Mini-ITX-Type Motherboard: This standardized form factor allows motherboard relocation to different cases if desired.
- ATX Power Connector: This is a standard and universally compatible connector.
- PCIe x4 Slot: Provides expansion for additional cards.
- Rear Panel Ports: Offers an excellent selection including two USB 4 ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, and 5-Gigabit Ethernet.
Framework even sells expansion boards. These customize the front panel port selection, adding further freedom.
Memory Consideration: LPDDR5x
However, there is a caveat. The main downside, according to iFixit, is LPDDR5x memory soldered directly to the motherboard. This RAM is not intended for end-user replacement. Framework chose an AMD Ryzen AI Max processor with integrated Radeon 8060S graphics. LPDDR5x provides the high bandwidth and speeds this chip needs. This configuration allows the Framework Desktop to handle demanding workloads. It can run large AI models and play games out of the box.
Maintainability Score Anticipated
Remember that the iFixit assessment is based on an engineering sample. A final maintainability score has not yet been released. However, initial impressions suggest Framework has delivered on its promise. The Framework Desktop appears to be a user-friendly, upgradable, and repairable PC. We await the full teardown and final verdict with anticipation.
