The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is the first smartphone boasting the brand-new Corning Gorilla Armor 2. Corning claims this newest glass version is stronger than ever and can withstand drops onto concrete from as high as 2.2 meters. YouTube channel PBKreviews tested this claim, and the results are available.
Screen First, Head-Height Drop: The Moment of Truth
The first test was a screen-down drop from head height onto a concrete surface. The tension was palpable as the phone was released. Did Gorilla Armor 2 live up to the hype? Yes. The screen remained pristine without a single crack or scratch. The titanium frame was less fortunate, acquiring a surprisingly large build-up of scratches.
Backside and Edge Drops: Rounds Two and Three
PBKreviews performed the same drop from the same height, back down. The outcome mirrored the first test. The rear Gorilla Armor 2 was unscathed. The titanium frame gained more scratches.
Finally, the S25 Ultra underwent an edge-down drop. Again, the glass remained spotless. The frame once more absorbed the shock and accumulated more cosmetic scratches.
The Verdict: Tough Glass, Scratched Frame, Fully Functional Phone
After these drop tests, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra emerged successfully. Corning Gorilla Armor 2 protection on both the front and back glass prevented any cracks. The touchscreen and cameras functioned seamlessly. The most significant damage was cosmetic scratches to the titanium frame, which remained structurally sound.
Important Caveat
These tests occurred on a smooth concrete surface. PBKreviews noted that drops on rougher surfaces like asphalt or uneven concrete could yield different results. A small pebble or sharp edge could concentrate force and compromise even the toughest glass.
Promising First Tests
These initial drop tests are promising. Corning Gorilla Armor 2 appears to be a significant upgrade in display protection, demonstrating impressive resistance to everyday drops. However, intentional drops are still not recommended.
