You will remember that Acer made smartphones years ago. This may seem like a distant memory for some people, given that LG sneakily exited the phone business in 2016. But guess what? Acer is making a comeback. They’ve just unveiled a pair of new smartphones, and they’re decidedly targeting the budget end of the scale.
Say hello to Acerpure Acerone Liquid S162E4 and Liquid S272E4. Yes, those are definitely some tongue twisters. Both phones were built to be easy on your pocketbook. Let's see what you are actually getting for your cash.
Acerpure Acerone Liquid S162E4: Practical Basics
The Liquid S162E4 is the lower-end of the doublet. Let’s take apart what it provides:
- Display: 6.5 inches LCD screen with HD+ resolution. Plain fantastic for day to day life.
- Front Facing Camera: A basic 5MP front-facing camera.
- Rear Camera: It appears to have a dual-camera arrangement on the reverse, although so far Acer has only revealed details of the primary 16MP camera.
- Processor: This is where things get a little old-school. It is driven by the MediaTek Helio P35, a chip from 2018.
- Memory: 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Standard for budget phones.
- Battery: A competent 5,000 mAh battery to keep you running throughout the day.
- Software: The good news—it ships with the newest Android 14 out of the box.
- Extras: Dual SIM slots, and even FM Radio support.
Acerpure Acerone Liquid S272E4: A Bit Bigger
Just above, we get the Liquid S272E4. There is a little bit more of it and some slight upgrades:
- Larger display: 6.74-inch LCD—still HD+ resolution.
- Same Selfie Snapper: The phone still has a 5MP selfie camera with a waterdrop notch.
- A New Main Camera but Only a Little Better: A 20MP primary rear camera (details on the second one are scant again).
- SoC: MediaTek Helio G36. It’s newer than the P35, but still an entry-level chip and possibly not much more powerful.
- Memory and Storage: Identical to the S162E4 – 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
- Battery and Software: 5,000 mAh battery and Android 14 as with the other model.
Budget Price, Budget Specs
Acer has not announced pricing yet, but it is expected to be close to $100. At that price point, those phones might be attractive for anyone who needs a basic smartphone without going into debt. We wonder, however, how well these older processors stand up to those of the competition of budget laptops available.
These phones are also wrapped in a little mystery. Others feel they could simply be licensed products produced by a different company, using the Acer brand name. We'll need to wait for their expected launch on March 25th to learn more – and see if Acer can make a true impact once again in the crowded world of smartphones.
