Presenting the HUAWEI Pura X: Is a 'Chubby' Screen the Future of Foldables
HUAWEI just launched a new twist on foldable smartphones with the Pura X. The screen has everyone abuzz. It's not even just because it's foldable. This time, HUAWEI is playing around with proportions. The Pura X features a 16:10 aspect ratio display. They're calling it "chubby," and it might just change the way you think about foldable screens.
HUAWEI Pura X Foldable Smartphone: A Wider Screen, Not a Longer One
The Pura X unfurls into a 6.3-inch flexible screen with a 2120x1320 pixel resolution and a silky-smooth 120Hz super-refresh rate. It's even bright, topping out at 2500 nits and featuring HDR for punchy images. When folded, there's a 3.5-inch outer display with a 980x980 resolution and square-ish 1x1 aspect ratio to match the main screen's headline figures.
HUAWEI consumer business head Yu Chengdong detailed the benefits of this unusual screen shape at launch. According to him, this wider design is a life-changer for viewing content. Compared to taller, thinner 16:9 screens, the Pura X gives a purported 40% larger review area for brief video clips. It offers an amazing 60% more when scrolling through photographs or reading material. That's a massive jump.
Photography and Power in the Pura X
Off-screen, the Pura X has a powerful camera system. At the back, it has a triple configuration:
- A 50MP main camera to capture everyday moments.
- A 40MP super-wide-angle lens for broad shots.
- And a 50MP telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom to bring you closer to the action.
Battery life is controlled by a 4720 mAh battery, with the aid of fast 66W wired charging and 40W wireless charging. For those accident-prone close to water, the Pura X has IPX8 water resistance.
Under the Hood and Software Details
HUAWEI is not disclosing precise processor specs yet. We do know the Pura X comes in either 12GB or a massive 16GB RAM options, and storage sizes of 256GB, 512GB, and even a massive 1TB. Software-wise, it's all on the latest Harmony OS Next with its revamped ecosystem, new core, and performance boosts through the Ark engine. HUAWEI states a 40% improvement in software efficiency compared to the previous OS version.
Adding to the discussion of smart features, the Pura X also supports general AI courtesy of the Pangu language model. It includes an innovative eye-tracking feature that enables scrolling through content by just moving your eyes.
Colors and Price Tags for the Pura X
If you're considering a Pura X, you can choose from five colors: classic gray, white, black, and two more unique colors. The Chinese price starts at around $1050 for the 256GB storage and 12GB RAM model.
The Future of Foldables Might Be Wider
The HUAWEI Pura X is definitely bringing something different to the foldable table. That "chubby" screen is intriguing. If HUAWEI's claims of viewing benefits hold up, it could be a legitimate step in a new direction for the design of foldable phones.
