Monster Spotlights: Know Thy Prey

Let’s take a closer look at some of these horror show beasts. Equip yourself with the knowledge necessary to hunt them properly. From molten rock monkeys to electrified wyverns, the Forbidden Lands are full of their own challenges.

Ajarakan: The Molten Mandrill

Consider Rajang, but trade the lightning for molten metal. Ajarakan is a bad-ass primate. This hulking Fanged Beast doesn’t just rely on its staggering strength; it’ll superheat its own shell by scraping it with its own claws until it glows red-hot. Bring a chilled drink and Water weapons to battle this blazing badass. Seen in the Oilwell Basin and Wyveria.

Arkveld: The Skeleton - The Wraith of the Wilds

Introducing Arkveld, the Wyvern who has become the face of Wilds. Known as “The White Wraith,” this creature is a major player in the story. It can deal Dragon damage with its whip-like forelimbs, giving it incredible reach. You're going to want to stay out of the way of that chainblade-style attack. Stick close and play melee or try to play long-distance ranged. It’s weak to Dragon itself (once you can make those weapons), but Poison and Paralysis work a treat as well. It appears in Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs and Wyveria.

Balahara: Sand Trap Leviathan

This Leviathan swapped water for sand. Balahara digs under the Windward Plains and creates quicksand traps to snare the prey. As a Water-element monster, lower that HP using Thunder or Paralysis weapons it struggles against.

Congalala: The Flatulence Fanged Beast

Prepare for stink. Congalala, a returning Fanged Beast, is known for its… digestive prowess. It’s flatulence applies a special status called Stench, which prevents you from using items — Deodorant is your friend here. It even eats mushrooms for its elemental breath attacks — poison from Toadstools, explosive fire from Nitroshrooms. Oh, and it throws dung. Seriously. This fragrant foe can be found in Scarlet Forest and Wyveria. It has weaknesses against Fire and Ice.

Rey Dau: Apex predator of the Windward Plains, reigning during lightning storms

This is a Flying Wyvern which channels lightning into its bladed wings and tail for electrifying strikes. Its signature move is a one-hit KO lightning blast railgun attached to my head. Dodge it to get an opening to whack its head. Weapons: Water and Ice are successful.

Gore Magala (High Risk): Frenzied The Follower

Fan favorite alert. High Rank now sees the return of Gore Magala, the Demi Elder Dragon. This monster inflicts the Frenzy Status, rewarding you for playing aggressively. Note that the Gore Magala armor set can synergize with Frenzy. Also take Fire, Thunder, or Dragon weapons, and attack its head and antenna. Found in Iceshard Cliffs.

Prepare to Hunt

This isn’t even scratching the surface of what spoils await you in Monster Hunter Wilds. Each monster has its own specific quirks that require different weapon sets and other gear to overcome. Examine their weak points, discover their methods of assault, and most importantly, get ready with your set of fashions. Happy Hunting
