Pump-Less Liquid Cooling: A Two-Phase Heat-Siphon
Demonstrated recently in Japan, Noctua's new technology, developed in collaboration with Belgian company Calyos, utilizes a two-phase heat-siphon concept. This innovative approach promises silent operation.
How It Works
Imagine a typical All-In-One liquid cooler, but without the pump noise. Inside, a special coolant is used. When the CPU generates heat, this coolant absorbs it and evaporates, transforming into gas.
This gas naturally rises into the radiator. There, away from the heat source and with fan assistance, it cools and condenses back into liquid. The liquid then returns to the CPU block, restarting the cycle. This continuous process is driven by pure thermodynamics, operating passively.
Advantages of Eliminating the Pump
Removing the pump offers several potential benefits. Pumps are mechanical components. They can generate noise, consume power, and represent a possible point of failure. A pump-less system could be quieter and potentially more reliable long-term due to fewer moving parts.
Mounting Limitation
This passive system has a specific requirement. The radiator must be mounted above the CPU socket. Top-panel mounting in a PC case is likely the only viable option. Side-panel or front-panel radiator mounts are not suitable because the heat-siphon principle relies on gravity for the liquid's return.
Release Timeline
Noctua has not yet disclosed detailed technical specifications. Performance data, coolant specifics, and pricing are still undisclosed. However, Roland Mossig, Noctua's head, indicated a tentative release timeframe of 2026.
