Anticipation has been high for AMD's next gen CPUs since their announcement. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D appears to be a powerful chip. PassMark has leaked some preliminary benchmarks, offering an early glance at its performance. The numbers are noteworthy.
Performance Leap Over the Previous Generation
First PassMark Results Show Ryzen 9 9950X3D vs Ryzen 9 7950X3D
Single-threaded performance for the 9950X3D is significantly 14% faster than its predecessor. Multi-threaded performance also sees a healthy boost, approximately 11.5% higher than the 7950X3D. This is a considerable leap.
These results were recorded on PassMark, a widely used measuring platform. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D achieved 4739 points in the single-thread test and a substantial 69701 points in the multi-threaded test. These scores are based on a limited number of tests. Final scores may vary slightly as more data becomes available. However, the trend is clear. AMD has delivered a significant performance increase.
Performance Against Other High-End CPUs
The benchmark leak provides interesting comparisons with other top-end chips. In multi-core performance, the 9950X3D is ahead of the standard Ryzen 9 9950X (non-3D V-Cache version), scoring around 5% higher. Single-core performance appears to be roughly equal between these two CPUs.
Comparing to Intel's flagship, Core Ultra 9 285K, the early PassMark figures indicate the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is about 3% faster in multi-core workloads. However, it is around 7% slower in single-core tests. Different benchmarks can show varied results. This provides a general understanding of the competitive landscape.
Launch Day Expectations
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D are scheduled for release on March 12th. Rumored pricing is $699 for the 9950X3D and $599 for the 9900X3D. The 9950X3D features 16 cores / 32 threads, a 4.3 GHz base clock, and a boost clock up to 5.7 GHz. Notably, this X3D revision shares a 170W TDP with its non-X3D counterpart, according to Front page Tech speculation.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D reportedly has an improved thermal design compared to previous generations. Overclocking is also said to be possible. While PassMark scores are not definitive for real-world application performance, they offer a strong initial impression of this new CPU's potential.
The review embargo lifts soon. A clearer picture of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D performance across various workloads, including gaming and demanding applications, will emerge. Detailed reviews will reveal if these early benchmark claims translate to real-world performance leadership. Stay informed for updates.
