Vivo Vision Mixed Reality Headset: Launching into Spatial Computing

Vivo, the phone company, just officially launched its own headset, called simply "Vision." The launch was at the Asian Forum in Boao. It marked Vivo's serious entry into the realm of spatial computing.

When you look at the Vivo Vision, you can't help but notice a resemblance to that particular headset from Cupertino. The design motif, the headband, even the external battery pack through the wire – everything has a tad of Apple Vision Pro to it. Vivo is not making the effort very strongly to hide where they got it from.

Attention to the Future: Consumer Robotics

Curiously, Vivo is not entering mixed reality for gaming purposes only. They are launching Vision as a core part of their "strategy for the expansion of real-time spatial computing for future consumer robotics applications." That is an extremely interesting direction. It suggests that Vivo sees mixed reality as more than games and media. Perhaps it is a necessary interface for future robots in our homes and lives.

What we got to see at the forum for now is a prototype. Vivo is targeting a mass release of Vision sometime later in mid-2025. No definite details regarding the specs of the headset are released yet. However, the company is definitely making out its intention.

Joining the XR Race

Vivo's move is just hot on the heels of Samsung announcing their own mixed reality headset. Samsung is developing theirs with Google and it has an Android XR foundation. That raises questions. Is Vivo also jumping onto the Android XR bandwagon? Or do they have their operating system cutting it out on their own terms? Only time will tell.

One thing's for sure: the mixed reality space is burning. Vivo's entry with Vision brings another interesting new entrant to the table. Whether it can actually compete with Apple, or find its own niche in robotics-oriented applications, remains to be determined.
