Assassin's Creed Invictus: New Multiplayer Game Set to Launch in 2025 Reimagining the Series
Rumor has it that Ubisoft is getting ready to release Assassin's Creed Invictus, a standalone multiplayer entry. It may arrive as soon as 2025.
The Most Likely New Reality(game) in the room.
Just as you had Assassin's Creed figured out in terms of what came next, buzz of a shocking twist has arrived. After releasing Nightmare, which garnered positive feedback, Ubisoft might be working on a completely unique multiplayer title. This is referred to as the Invictus codename, and could be here by 2025.
This remains unverified. Most of the rumors surround the reliable inside tipster Tom Henderson, who suggested that Invictus "should" drop this year. Ubisoft provided a brief mention of the project in 2022. They announced a stand-alone multiplayer game in the works at a team that also included veterans of For Honor.
What Is ‘Invictus’ Supposed to Be?
No more Brotherhoodesque clunky cat-and-mouse gameplay. If the rumors are correct, Invictus is one of those, and then some. It’s an arcade experience, so to speak. Less stealth and much more fun with pandemonium.
Here’s what the chatter says:
- It could be something like Fall Guys or Super Smash Bros.
- You could play several rounds between game modes such as team deathmatch, free-for-all and speedrunning contests.
- There may be special abilities or power-ups.
Another critical detail to note is that the camera perspective might also be a bit more zoomed out than the previous titles of the Assassin's Creed.
Characters or map locations from a previous game, like Ezio, or locations from past titles would know come back.
This reminds me a bit of a surprising direction for the franchise and sounds clearly centered around reaching a much wider audience than past iterations of multiplayer modes. These tended to skew heavier to niche groups of players. Assassin's Creed Red will probably be a piece of the 'Infinity'hub — Ubisoft's next launcher for the Assassin's Creed experiences.
The Multiplayer Push: What’s Changed?
The timing is noteworthy. If Shadows is successful, Ubisoft may want to keep the Assassin's Creed train rolling. A more modest multiplayer experience, potentially free-to-play, could fill that gap until the next primary single-player release. This is tentatively codenamed Hexe, rumored for 2026 or later, and set in 16th-century Germany.
However, challenges exist. Ubisoft’s history with live-service multiplayer games like Hyperscape and XDefiant leaves Invictus’s long-term future and monetization approach in doubt. Will Invictus be found and kept by an audience and avoid common live-service woes?
Assassin's Creed: A Future Perhaps Too Full
However, with Invictus now in the mix, it could be a busy period for fans of Assassin's Creed. There's also been speculation about a potential Black Flag remake, something that we think may have slipped to after an initial 2025 target with Shadows. Ubisoft continues to push its most prolific IPs, forming a new subsidiary specifically dedicated to IPs such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
As of now, Assassin's Creed Invictus is still a rumor. If it comes out this year, it would be a surprising and potentially polarizing entry into the history of the series. We do await official confirmation from Ubisoft though.
