ASUS X870 MAX Gaming Series: Redefining Value in Budget Gaming Motherboards
For years, building a budget gaming PC with an ASUS motherboard often meant considering the Prime series. They were decent but lacked the feature set of equally priced boards from MSI, Gigabyte, or ASRock. ASUS is a name associated with quality, yet this quality was often higher priced, except in their budget-friendly Prime series.
But ASUS is mixing things up. Introducing the brand-new X870 MAX Gaming series. This range of motherboards is set to sit comfortably between the Prime and the more premium TUF Gaming series. It offers more than Prime, at a cost less than TUF. This could be the sweet spot gamers have been waiting for.
Presenting the First in Line: X870 MAX Gaming WiFi7
Leading the charge is the X870 MAX Gaming WiFi7 motherboard. The board is built for the latest AM5 socket. It is future-proofed for the upcoming Ryzen 9000 series processors. Recognizing user preference for aesthetics, it comes in two flavors: a sinister all-black version, and an aggressive white version. Both versions have the same specifications, differing only in cosmetics to fit your build theme.

What Can You Expect in Terms of Features
Even from initial details, the X870 MAX Gaming WiFi7 seems like a capable option for its category:
- PCIe 5.0 Ready: Both the primary PCIe x16 slot and M.2 slot have blazing-fast PCIe Gen 5.0 speeds for the latest GPUs and NVMe SSDs.
- Ample Expansion: It boasts a total of four physical PCI-E x16 slots, offering plenty of expandability.
- Memory Ready: Four DDR5 DIMM slots are present, ready for high-speed RAM (exact speeds to be decided).
- Storage Options: A total of 3 M.2 slots and 4 SATA ports are present for a good mix of high-speed NVMe and regular SATA storage.
- Modern Connectivity: WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are built-in for the newest wireless standards.
- Decent I/O: The rear panel looks to be plentifully endowed with newer Type-A and Type-C USB ports. It might be a bit streamlined in terms of sheer port count and higher-end troubleshooting features. It does not seem to have an optical audio port either.
Positioned for Value
ASUS is clearly attempting to compete with Gigabyte Gaming X and MSI Gaming Plus lineups. Featuring a feature set one level up from their Prime boards, but at a price point lower than their TUF series (and likely lower than competitors' value lines), the X870 MAX Gaming has the potential to be a strong contender for gamers.
While official launch pricing and dates are not public, early rumors place the cost at anywhere from $200-$250. If ASUS can achieve this target, the X870 MAX Gaming WiFi7 will be one of the best value AM5 motherboards on the market at launch.
