The hype over the Nintendo Switch 2 could be subdued by a pair of less-than-ideal developments. It looks like Nintendo's much-hyped next-generation console is hitting a rough patch, with an indefinite hold on its China launch and some troubling public relations gaffes.
China Launch on Hold: Uncertainty Reigns
Chinese gamers awaiting their turn to get their hands on the Switch 2 will have to wait, and perhaps longer than they had hoped. Current reports indicate Nintendo has decided to push back the release of the console in China indefinitely. What's the holdup It seems Nintendo is taking a cautious approach, wanting to dip its toes in and determine the level of demand that actually exists for the Switch 2 on the Chinese market before dropping it.
This silence is not wholly without precedent. The original Nintendo Switch also had a late launch in China, two years after its global debut in 2019. PR Blunder: "Buy a Switch if You Can't Afford Switch 2"
Adding to Nintendo's misery, a recent statement from Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser has been generating outrage and backlash. During a discussion on the pricing of the Switch 2, Bowser suggested that those who are unable to pay for it should simply "buy the original Switch."
While Bowser likely intended to highlight the continued viability of the base Switch and Switch Lite, the comment has been widely perceived as tone-deaf and out of touch. It immediately drew comparisons with a virtually identical notorious comment by then-Xbox executive Don Mattrick, who, in the face of criticism of the Xbox One's online requirements, infamously said, "We have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity it's called Xbox 360."
Mattrick's comment was a symbol of the Xbox One's disastrous launch messaging. While the Switch 2 will likely not have the same fate – many experts still predict that it is going to be a massive success – Bowser's claim has, however, created an unwanted PR storm for Nintendo. It has the potential to anger some fans and overshadow the otherwise positive unveiling of the new console.
