Samsung Resumes One UI 7 Updates

If you've been waiting (maybe patiently, or maybe impatiently!) for the One UI 7 update on your Samsung Galaxy phone, there's finally some good news. After hitting the brakes due to an unexpected issue, Samsung is now restarting the One UI 7 rollout, which is based on the fresh Android 15.

A Rocky Start and a Necessary Pause

Samsung initially rolled out One UI 7 on April 7, 2025, with the intention of getting Android 15 to its newest flagship phones first, like the Galaxy S24 lineup and the foldable Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. But it didn't exactly go smoothly. A frustrating bug was found, particularly among South Korean users, which in certain cases prevented them from unlocking their phones after an update. Ouch!

Though Samsung did not have a public dive into the individual cause, they did see the need to briefly halt the update. The goal was straightforward: give users the best experience, even if it meant a temporary delay.

Fortunately, the delay was brief. It had taken about a week to work out that all-crucial bug, but Samsung is now pressing play on the One UI 7 release again. This new release is already going live with customers globally, including the United States on major carriers like Verizon and T-Mobile. Reports from countries like India, South Africa, and Thailand also show the update rolling in for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6.

What's New in One UI 7?

So what do you get with this release? One UI 7 is not just an increase in version number; there are some great upgrades:

  • Fresh new icons and new design refresh for the camera application.
  • Split notification shade and quick settings panel re-design.
  • Helpful options like camera filters you can set yourself, recording calls and saving them as text transcripts, support for Log videos, and Audio Eraser.
  • Refinements to AI-powered features and controls and privacy controls.
  • Overall objectives for a more fluid and better-responsiveness experience to your phone.

Who's Next Up?

Although the S24 lineup, Z Fold 6, and Z Flip 6 are getting it first (and some fresh 2025 devices like the S25 lineup even shipped with One UI 7 pre-installed), Samsung has not forgotten about its other devices. The next group which is supposed to receive the update is:

  • Galaxy S23 lineup (S23, S23+, S23 Ultra)
  • Galaxy S24 FE and S23 FE
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5
  • Galaxy Tab S10 and Tab S9 series

A Little Bit of Caution (Just in Case)

While the newly published firmware now is intended to fix the unlock bug (as determined by build number S928NKSU4BYD9 for the S24 series), a small tip if you are updating your S24 for the first time: Some recommend you disable your screen lock protection temporarily *prior* to installing the update, just to be totally safe. It is likely fixed, but better safe than sorry with a bug like this!

Looking Ahead with Samsung

It's fair to say this One UI update has been slightly rockier and slower than some of Samsung's past major updates, especially considering Android 15 was already out to developers back in September 2024. That being said, with the rollout accelerating more aggressively now, hopefully, it won't be long before other devices start to pick up pace as well.

Samsung is already planning ahead too because they're supposedly already internally beta-testing what will ultimately be One UI 8 using Android 16. That means that they're hungry to return to playing catch-up in the sense of how fast they're churning out updates.

Make sure to keep an eye on your phone's software update setting, though! If your phone is one that's in line for it, your One UI 7 update should be arriving shortly
